Visit to the La Roche House

Icon of modern heritage,
the first expression of purism in architecture,
it is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Designed and built between 1923 and 1925 by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, the Maison La Roche was widely photographed and admired from the end of the 1920s. Like all the Purist villas, it helped to establish Le Corbusier as the master of modern architecture.

The use of new building materials such as reinforced concrete allowed Le Corbusier to implement for the first time what he called in 1927 "the five points of a new architecture": the free facade, the free plan, the long windows, the roof-garden and the pilotis.

In accordance with the wishes of its patron, Raoul La Roche, a banker and collector of modern art, the house is divided into two parts: the gallery which displayed his collection of paintings and his private flats.
The Maison La Roche and the Maison Jeanneret were the subject of several restoration campaigns from the 1970s. They were classified as historic monuments in 1996 and, since 2016, have been included with 16 other works by Le Corbusier on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

L’Absolu et 45 variations de pièces de fer
Gérard Rancinan & Caroline Gaudriault
Maison La Roche, Paris
Du 8 novembre 2022 au 7 janvier 2023

The Fondation Le Corbusier presents the exhibition L’Absolu et 45 variations de pièces de fer by the artist-photographer Gérard Rancinan and the author Caroline Gaudriault at the Maison La Roche. Accustomed to delineating the symbols of our society, they are now focusing on an emblematic place, the Maison La Roche, the first purist house by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. From this house, they retain "the idea of minimalism of the material as a primary idea for any vision of a world" and propose a "photographic variation of 45 iron pieces".

The event takes place during Paris Photo, À Paris pendant Paris Photo (off), from 10 to 13 November 2022.
