Naming a building or monument correctly goes far beyond mere semantic rigour; it is an act of recognition, the first line of defence against the erasure of our collective memory. To assign an incorrect name to these stone witnesses or, worse still, to condemn them to anonymity through oblivion, is to sever the invisible thread that binds us to our past.
In this respect, the European Heritage Days serve as a crucial wake-up call. By highlighting the obvious dangers threatening our cultural heritage, including within Switzerland, this event does more than merely draw attention to the urgency of the situation. It stands as a platform for action and collective reflection, an invitation to explore innovative ways of safeguarding this common heritage.
Every cultural asset embodies the story of an era that must be preserved. Whether it be historic buildings facing demolition, archaeological remains obscured by the passage of time, or traditional craft skills displaced by technological modernity, we have a responsibility to act.
Furthermore, far from being insurmountable obstacles, regulatory constraints and contemporary standards can become catalysts for a new kind of creativity, which is essential for reinterpreting and ensuring the long-term survival of this precious heritage.

A temporary exhibition is on display in a historic shop window of the Clarté Building. Through some fifteen key dates, documents and archive photographs, it traces the building’s history, the projects currently underway and the challenges involved in its preservation.

This documentary takes viewers on a journey in the footsteps of the Swiss Anabaptists who immigrated to the United States from the late 17th century onwards. The Anabaptist communities founded towns with evocative names such as Berne and Geneva in Indiana, and Zurich. The documentary explores how these communities have preserved their Swiss heritage. “American Yodel” offers an informative, humorous and moving insight into these communities with Swiss roots, their history, their traditions and their adaptation to American life. -
Sunday 20 September at 4.00 pm: Screening of ‘Switzerland in the Iron Age: The Helvetii, a Myth Under the Microscope’, directed by Philippe Nicolet (2025), running time: 52 mins
The Helvetii shaped Switzerland’s identity. However, recent discoveries show that the Helvetii did not arrive on the Swiss Plateau until the 1st century BCE and were planning to leave immediately to emigrate to south-western Gaul. The role of the Helvetii and the origins of the Confœderatio Helvetica will therefore be re-examined throughout the film.
